On 27 October I attended a fundraiser for the Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation. The all-ladies event held at the Coastlands Hotel in Umhlanga was superbly organised by Tanya Tostee and Nikki Mitchell Smith.
Although October was breast cancer awareness month, Pink Phoenix creates awareness for many types of cancer and its survivors. The foundation was started by cancer survivor Sharon van Straten and this year’s foundation ambassador is the beautiful Candice King. In front of a packed audience of lovely ladies Candice gave a brave and very moving account of her current battle with cancer. Durbanite Chantelle Prince, who is being treated for breast cancer, was also at the event.
I could not help but think of my own mother who is dealing with the disease – for the second time around. Not only has she (in her first encounter with cancer) and Sharon survived the disease, others, like Candice and Chantelle, have courage enough to speak publicly while they are still suffering and their futures remain uncertain. Still others have become involved in fundraising for expenses incurred in treatment of sufferers.
